-=> INFORMATION ON SIGNATURE <=-
Files that must be included in the distribution of Signature 2.00:
Filename Size * Date ^ Time ^ CRC Checks ~
------------ ----- ------- ------------- --------------
SIG.EXE 46675 9/13/92 19:48 (7:48p) 4915 111E
SIGCFG.EXE 44928 9/14/92 19:03 (7:03p) 6C21 1364
SIG200.DOC 15699 9/14/92 19:32 (7:32p) Not applicable
VALIDATE.COM 12197 3/24/92 14:20 (2:20p) D5BB 166F
VALIDATE.DOC 2423 3/24/92 14:34 (2:34p) Not applicable
* The size has been listed to help prevent alterations to the program
and text files. These sizes are accurate; if they do not match the
size listed by DOS, DO NOT USE THIS SOFTWARE. Any alterations to the
software could mean that there is a virus in the software.
^ The date and time of these files are offered to help prevent
alterations to these files. If SIG200.DOC has been altered, the
time and date stamps MAY be different from the times and dates
listed above.
~ The CRC Checks are listed to be safe in case your software has been
infected with a virus. To obtain these checks, type the following
at your DOS prompt:
VALIDATE [filename.ext]
where [filename.ext] is the filename and extension. So, if you wanted
to obtain the CRC checks for SIG.EXE, type the following:
VALIDATE SIG.EXE
then you should see the following appear on your screen:
VALIDATE 0.4 Copyright 1988-92 by McAffe Associates. (408) 988-3832
File Name: SIG.EXE
Size: 43,539
Date: 9-5-1992
File Authentication:
Check Method 1 - 4915
Check Method 2 - 111E
You can do the same for the other executable files (SIGCFG.EXE and
VALIDATE.COM)
-=> REQUIREMENTS TO RUN SIGNATURE 2.0 <=-
Signature 2.0 is a major update in that it has many new features,
including the following:
1) You can have Signature ask you if you want to insert your
signature or have it insert it automatically.
2) Now works with monochrome monitors.
3) You don't need to download a separate file each time you upgrade
to a newer version of your Off-Line Reader -- Signature 2.00 now
supports Blue Wave, Jabber, Silly Little Mail Reader, and Offline
Xpress in ONE PROGRAM!
4) A configuration program.
Because of these features, Signature now requires LESS than Signature
1.x!
Requirements: Color OR Monochrome monitor
Silly Little Mail Reader, Offline Xpress, Jabber,
or Blue Wave
ONLY 109k of free memory!
81k of free disk space (for the program files)
DOS 2.0 or later
Recommended: Swapping turned on (in SLMR, OLX, Jabber, and Blue Wave)
to either the disk or memory (EMS or XMS)
(see the documentation that came with your off-line
reader for more information on swapping)
DOS 3.3 or later
-=> INSTALLATION PROCEEDURES <=-
These proceedures assume that you are using the text editor that
comes with your Off-Line Reader. If you use a different editor,
just insert the path and filename of the program you are using instead
of the one I specify. For example, in the case of Blue Wave, the
editor there is TED3.COM. I would say something to the effect of
"Now load TED3 and edit the file..." You would then type the name
of your program, in place of TED3. So, if you are using Boxer, for
example, you would type "B ...." instead.
-=> Installation Proceedures for Blue Wave 2.10 <=-
This section assumes that you have installed Blue Wave in the directory
C:\BWAVE.
Locate the files SIG.EXE and SIGCFG.EXE, the two main files needed to
use Signature.
Once you have located them, copy them to your Blue Wave directory, in
this case, C:\BWAVE.
Next, run Blue Wave like you would normally, but don't bother opening a
mail packet.
At the Main Menu, highlight or click on "Setup Parameters". Then, at
the next menu that is presented to you, highlight or click on
"Directories". Then, after pulling down that menu, highlight or click
on "Editor File Path", and hit enter. Then, enter the path to where you
have saved the file EDITOR.BAT; in the case of this example, it would be
C:\BWAVE. Then, add a backslash (\) and type EDITOR.BAT. So, if you are
using C:\BWAVE, enter the following:
C:\BWAVE\EDITOR.BAT
Then hit enter.
Quit from this menu, and make sure that when you are prompted, to save
the changes that you have made.
Now you can quit Blue Wave... you're ALMOST done! Skip past the next
three sections to the section labelled "CONFIGURING SIGNATURE".
-=> Installation Proceedures for Jabber 1.2 <=-
NOTE: You need to have an external editor handy, TED3, Boxer, or
some sort of text editor. Jabber has an internal editor, but that
editor only supports messages and no other files. Also, whatever editor
you use, you may want to keep. There is a conflict between Signature 2.0
and Jabber's internal editor, so you will need an external editor to use
Signature 2.0. There may be a future update that will fix this conflict.
This section assumes that you have installed Jabber 1.2 in the
directory C:\JABBER.
Change into your Jabber directory, in this case, C:\JABBER. Load up
your editor and create a file called EDITOR.BAT in your Jabber directory.
Enter the following text into your new file:
@ECHO OFF
[path of editor] %1
SIG %1
Where [path of editor] is the path and filename of the external editor
you are going to use. For demonstrative purposes, use the following as
an example:
@ECHO OFF
C:\BOXER\B %1
SIG %1
Now, when you are done entering this text, save the file.
Locate the two files SIG.EXE and SIGCFG.EXE. Copy these to your Jabber
directory.
Now, re-run your text editor and load up JABBER.CFG. This file is already
located in your Jabber directory.
Find the section named "External Program Files". In this section of the
file should be a line that says "External editor (blank = internal editor)"
On the line after that should be "{EDITOR=}" (This assumes that you have
not used any other editors besides Jabber's internal editor). Once you
have located this line, change the text to read:
{EDITOR=[path]\EDITOR.BAT}
Where [path] is the directory where Jabber is located. In this example,
Jabber is in C:\Jabber:
{EDITOR=C:\JABBER\EDITOR.BAT}
Now, save this file.
You're almost done! Skip past the next two sections to the section
labelled "CONFIGURING SIGNATURE".
-=> Installation Proceedures for Silly Little Mail Reader 2.1a <=-
This section assumes that you have installed SLMR 2.1a in the directory
C:\SLMR.
Locate the two files SIG.EXE and SIGCFG.EXE. These two files are needed
to operate Signature properly. Once you have found them, copy them into
your SLMR directory.
Now, open a file named CONFIG.MR with your text editor. (You can load
it by running SLME by typing SLME CONFIG.MR. SLME is the editor that
comes with SLMR) This file is already in your SLMR directory.
On the first line, you should see the following:
EDITOR = SLME
(This assumes that you have not been using any other editor besides the
one that comes with SLMR.) Change this line to read:
EDITOR = EDITOR.BAT
Now, save this file as you would a message.
You're almost finished installing Signature... skip the next section
and start reading the section titled "CONFIGURING SIGNATURE".
-=> Installation Proceedures for Offline Xpress 2.1 <=-
This section assumes that you have installed OLX 2.1 in the directory
C:\OLX.
Locate the two files SIG.EXE and SIGCFG.EXE, which are the two main
Signature files. These are required for Signature to run properly.
Once you have found them, copy them to your OLX directory, in this case,
C:\OLX.
Open up a file called "CONFIG.OLX", which is located in your OLX
directory. (You can edit this file by using OLXED, the editor that comes
with OLX. Just type OLXED CONFIG.OLX and hit enter.)
Use the same text editor as you used above.
On the first line, you should see the following:
EDITOR = OLXED
(This is assuming you have not used any other editors with OLX besides
the one that comes with it)
Change this line to read:
EDITOR = EDITOR.BAT
Save this file as you normally would a message.
Now, you're almost there!
-=> CONFIGURING SIGNATURE <=-
This is probably the easiest and quickest part of the installation...it
shouldn't take more than one minute!
Change into the directory where you have your off-line reader located.
In the part of the installation that you did earlier, you copied two files,
SIG.EXE and SIGCFG.EXE into the directory where you have your Off-Line
Reader. Now that you have changed into that directory, run SIGCFG by
typing SIGCFG and pressing Enter at your DOS prompt. Then you will
be presented with a question:
SIGCFG -- Signature 2.12 Configuration Program
Do you wish to continue?
[Y/n]
Since this is the first time you are installing Signature, press Y
or Enter. Then, you will be presented with another question:
Do you want to use 1, 2, or 3 Signatures?
[1/2/3/q]
Choose how many signatures that you wish to use. If you choose two or
three, you will be required to make additional files later, and to make
a choice every time you write a message to insert Signature one, two, or
three.
Next, you're presented with another question:
Do you want Signature to ask you if you want to insert your Signature?
[Y/n/q]
This is a new feature in Signature. You can have Signature ask you
if you want to insert a Signature after you have entered your message,
or you can have it automatically insert the message for you, without
asking. Press Y or Enter if you want to be asked every time. Press
N if you don't want to be asked at all, or press Q to quit the
installation. This question only appears if you chose to use only one
Signature.
The next question is also a new feature.
Do you have a color monitor?
[Y/n/q]
This is an easy question...if your monitor displays colors, press Y or
Enter. If it doesn't, press N. If you want to quit, press Q.
And, another important question:
Do you use B)lue Wave, J)abber, S)LMR, or O)LX?
[B/J/S/O/q]
Press the letter that corresponds to the OffLine Reader (OLR) that you are
using. If you are using Blue Wave, press B; Jabber, press J; Silly Little
Mail Reader, press S; Offline Xpress, press O. If you want to abort the
installation, press Q.
Now you'll be asked the following:
Please supply the path and filename for the editor that you wish to use.
Make sure to include any parameters to pass to the editor.
If you are using the internal editor, just hit [Enter].
>
Here you must type the path and filename that allows you to run your
editor. For example, if you are not using the internal editor, and you
are using Boxer, you might type the following:
F:\BOXER\B.EXE -b -c -j -M255 -7 -5 -3
and hit enter. If you don't pass any parameters on, you might type
F:\BOXER\B.EXE
and hit enter. Or, if you are using the internal editor, just press
enter. This question will not be presented to you if you are using
Jabber.
The next question is required to run the batch file properly.
Are you using DOS version 3.3 or later?
[Y/n/q]
If you use a version of DOS between 2.0 and 3.2 then press no. If you use
DOS 3.3 or later, press Y. Press Q to quit, and stop setting up Signature.
Now you'll be presented with the choices you have made, and a question
asking you
Is this correct?
[Y/n/q]
If the choices displayed are correct, press Y or Enter. If not, press
N, and you will go through the configuration questions again. If you
want to abort, press Q.
Once you have finished configuring Signature, SIGCFG will create and write
a file to your hard disk, named SIG.CFG. DO NOT DELETE THIS FILE. If you
delete SIG.CFG, you will need to re-configure Signature for it to work.
-=> CREATING YOUR SIGNATURE <=-
The last step in installing Signature is to create a text file called
SIGNATUR.E01 in your OLR's main directory. If you decided to use two
or three signatures, you will have to create one or two more files for
Signature to work properly. They will be called SIGNATUR.E02 and
SIGNATUR.E03.
Load up a text editor and create a file named SIGNATUR.E01 by typing
the following:
[editor] SIGNATUR.E01
Where [editor] is the name of the editor that you use.
Now, in this file, enter whatever you want added to your messages. This
will be added to the end of every message, if you configured Signature
to not ask you if you want to insert a signature. If you configured
Signature to ask you every time you enter a message if you want to insert
a signature, this will be inserted only when you permit.
Save this file when you are done.
If you are going to use two Signatures, do the above, except create a
new file called SIGNATUR.E02.
[editor] SIGNATUR.E02
If you are going to use three Signatures, create SIGNATUR.E01 as described
above, and also create SIGNATUR.E02 and SIGNATUR.E03.
[editor] SIGNATUR.E02
[editor] SIGNATUR.E03
